Do You Have to Cut Aussiedoodle Hair?

How Often Should You Cut Aussiedoodle Hair?

Most Aussiedoodle owners schedule professional grooming every 6-8 weeks year-round. During summer months, you might want to go shorter or more frequent to keep your dog comfortable in the heat. Winter cuts can be longer to provide extra warmth.

Puppies usually get their first professional groom around 4-5 months old, starting with just a face and feet trim. By 6 months, they're ready for full grooming sessions. The key is establishing a routine early so your dog gets comfortable with the process.

Between professional visits, plan on at-home brushing 3-4 times per week. Daily brushing is even better, especially during the 6-12 month "coat change" period when the puppy coat transitions to adult hair.

What Happens If You Don't Groom Your Aussiedoodle?

We Are Fine and dandy

Skipping regular grooming leads to serious matting that can be painful for your dog. Mats pull on the skin and can hide skin infections, hot spots, or parasites. Once the coat is severely matted, groomers often have to shave the entire dog down to the skin.

Long hair around the eyes can cause tear staining and vision problems. Overgrown hair on the paws traps dirt and moisture, leading to infections between the toes. The sanitary areas need regular trimming for hygiene reasons.

We've seen families struggle with matted coats because they didn't realize how much maintenance was involved. That's why we educate our puppy families upfront about the grooming commitment - it's part of responsible ownership.

Finding Good Groomers in Western North Carolina

Start looking for a groomer before you need one. Good groomers in the Canton and Asheville area often book weeks in advance. Ask to meet the groomer first and see their facility - you want someone experienced with doodle coats specifically.

Bring photos of the cut you want and be specific about length preferences. A good groomer will ask about your dog's activity level and your maintenance preferences at home. They should also check for any skin issues or unusual lumps during the grooming process.

Many groomers offer puppy introduction packages that help young dogs get comfortable with the process gradually. This is especially valuable for our home-raised puppies who are well-socialized but still need positive grooming experiences.

Easier Daily Maintenance at Home

When you keep up with professional cuts, daily brushing becomes much easier and faster. A properly trimmed coat is less likely to mat, meaning less work for you between grooming appointments. Your dog will be more comfortable during brushing sessions too.
