Do Aussiedoodles Like to Be Held and Cuddled?

Most Aussiedoodles absolutely love physical affection. These are "velcro dogs" who want to be near their people, and many genuinely enjoy being held, cuddled, and snuggled.

Aussiedoodle Bonding and Affection Style

Aussiedoodles are often called "velcro dogs" because they stick to their people. This comes from both parent breeds—Australian Shepherds are deeply loyal working partners, and Poodles are known for their strong human bonds.

What this looks like: Following you room to room, wanting to be on the couch with you, leaning against your legs, requesting belly rubs, and yes—many love being held or sitting in laps (even when they're a bit too big for it).

Physical affection: Most Aussiedoodles enjoy petting, scratching, cuddling on the couch, and sleeping near (or on) their people. They're not typically aloof or independent dogs.

The flip side: This strong bonding means Aussiedoodles can develop separation anxiety if not properly trained. They need to learn that being alone is okay too.

Puppies vs Adult Cuddling

We Are Fine and dandy

Puppies: Young Aussiedoodles are often wiggly and energetic, wanting to play more than cuddle. They may enjoy brief holding but then want down to explore. This is normal—they're still learning about the world.

As they mature: Most Aussiedoodles become more cuddly with age. Once the puppy energy settles (usually around 2-3 years), they often become champion snugglers.

Individual personalities: Some Aussiedoodles are lap dogs from day one. Others prefer sitting beside you rather than on you. Both are normal and neither indicates more or less love.

Building the bond: Regular positive handling during puppyhood creates adults who enjoy physical affection. Our Dandy Manners program includes gentle handling so puppies are comfortable being touched and held.

Teaching Appropriate Affection

While most Aussiedoodles love cuddles, it's important to teach appropriate boundaries—for their sake and yours.

Consent-based affection: Let your dog approach you for cuddles sometimes rather than always scooping them up. This builds trust and teaches them they have some control.

Teaching "down" or "off": A 35-pound dog jumping into everyone's lap isn't always welcome. Teach them to wait for an invitation.

Calm handling: If your puppy squirms when held, don't force it. Short positive sessions build comfort better than restrained cuddling.

Reading body language: Learn when your dog is enjoying affection (relaxed body, soft eyes) vs tolerating it (stiff body, whale eye, trying to move away).
