Keeping Your Fine & Dandy Pup Safe This Thanksgiving

As we head into Thanksgiving week, we're filled with gratitude for the amazing Fine & Dandy Aussiedoodles community.

This year has been incredible, and we're so thankful for each family that has welcomed one of our puppies into their homes. Watching your pups grow and thrive brings us so much joy!

With the holiday festivities approaching, we want to make sure your furry family members stay safe and healthy during all the celebrations. Here are some important safety tips to keep in mind:

The Danger of Table Scraps

We know those puppy dog eyes are hard to resist when you're gathered around the Thanksgiving table, but many holiday foods can be harmful or even toxic to dogs. Turkey skin, gravy, and fatty foods can cause pancreatitis, while seemingly innocent ingredients like onions, garlic, grapes, and certain seasonings can be dangerous. Chocolate desserts and anything containing xylitol (a common sweetener) are especially toxic.

Stick to your dog's regular diet and consider preparing a small, dog-safe "Thanksgiving plate" with plain turkey meat (no skin or bones) and plain sweet potato if you want to include them in the festivities.

Counter-Surfing and Food Thieves

Thanksgiving spreads are irresistible to our clever Aussiedoodles! Pies cooling on counters, butter dishes, and dinner rolls are all fair game in your pup's mind. Beyond the upset stomach from overeating, there are serious risks:

  • Turkey bones can splinter and cause choking or internal damage

  • Baking ingredients like raw dough can expand in their stomach

  • Toothpicks, skewers, and food wrappers can cause blockages or worse

Keep food pushed back from counter edges, gate off the kitchen during meal prep, and make sure garbage cans are secure. A little prevention goes a long way!

The Great Escape: Door Dashing with Guests

The doorbell rings, excited guests arrive, kids rush in, the door stays open a bit too long—and suddenly your pup sees an opportunity for adventure. Thanksgiving gatherings mean lots of comings and goings, which can be stressful for dogs and create escape opportunities.

Before guests arrive:

  • Make sure your dog's collar fits properly and tags are up to date

  • Consider keeping your pup in a separate room or crate when guests first arrive

  • Remind guests (especially kids) to be mindful of the door

  • If your dog will be greeting guests, keep them leashed until everyone is inside

Dogs Left Outside During Gatherings

It might seem like a good idea to let your pup play outside during the party, but unsupervised outdoor time during gatherings can be risky. Dogs can escape through gates left open by guests, eat something harmful in the yard, or become anxious being separated from the family during busy times.

If your dog needs a break from the activity, a quiet room inside with their bed, toys, and water is much safer than leaving them outside alone for long periods of time.

Managing Fear and Stress

Not all dogs love crowds, noise, and unfamiliar faces—especially children who might be loud or want to hug and pet them. Aussiedoodles are generally social, but every dog has their limits. Watch for signs of stress like:

  • Hiding or trying to escape

  • Excessive panting or drooling

  • Pinned-back ears or tucked tail

  • Growling or showing teeth

Create a safe, quiet space where your dog can retreat when feeling overwhelmed. This might be a bedroom, crate, or quiet corner with their favorite bed. Let guests (especially children) know to give your pup space and always supervise interactions between dogs and kids.

Keep Routines As Normal As Possible

With all the excitement, try to maintain your dog's regular feeding schedule, potty breaks, and exercise routine. A tired, well-exercised dog is much more likely to relax during the festivities. A morning walk or play session before guests arrive can work wonders!

The Bottom Line

Thanksgiving should be enjoyable for everyone in your family—including your four-legged members! With a little planning and awareness, you can keep your Fine & Dandy pup safe while still including them in the holiday joy.

From all of us at Fine & Dandy Aussiedoodles, we're so grateful for this wonderful community. Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
