Are Aussiedoodles High Maintenance? An Honest Look

Let's be straightforward: Aussiedoodles require more maintenance than some breeds but less than others. They're not "set it and forget it" dogs, but they're also not impossibly demanding if you know what you're signing up for.

Grooming Maintenance

This is where Aussiedoodles require the most consistent effort. That beautiful, low-shedding coat needs regular attention.

Time commitment: 15-20 minutes of brushing 2-3 times per week. More during seasonal changes or if you keep the coat longer.

Professional grooming: Every 6-8 weeks, budget $60-$100+ depending on your area and coat style. This isn't optional—skipping grooming leads to painful matting.

Compared to other breeds: More maintenance than short-coated dogs, similar to other doodles and Poodles, less than some long-coated breeds that shed constantly.

The reality: If regular brushing and grooming appointments feel overwhelming, an Aussiedoodle might not be your best match. If you enjoy the grooming routine and bonding time, it's manageable.

Exercise and Mental Needs

We Are Fine and dandy

Aussiedoodles come from two working breeds. They need both physical exercise and mental stimulation.

Daily exercise: 45-60 minutes minimum. This can be walks, fetch, hiking, swimming—they're versatile. Puppies need multiple shorter sessions rather than one long outing.

Mental stimulation: Puzzle feeders, training sessions, new experiences. A physically tired but mentally bored Aussiedoodle may still be restless.

What happens without enough activity: Destructive chewing, excessive barking, anxiety, hyperactivity. These aren't "bad dog" behaviors—they're signs of an under-stimulated intelligent dog.

Compared to other breeds: Higher needs than laid-back breeds like Basset Hounds, similar to Labs and other active breeds, possibly less intense than working-line herding dogs.

Financial Maintenance

Beyond time, Aussiedoodles require financial investment throughout their lives.

Grooming: $700-$1,500+ annually for professional grooming
Quality food: $50-$100+ monthly depending on brand and size
Veterinary care: Annual checkups, vaccinations, preventatives
Training: Group classes or private training, especially in the first year
Pet insurance (recommended): $30-$70+ monthly

The upfront puppy cost is just the beginning. Make sure you're prepared for ongoing expenses.
